Dens, and Packs, and Lions - Oh My!

An Introduction to Cub Scouting for new Families to Pack 394

So you've decided to join our Pack, but are a little overwhelmed with all the new terms! No worries, we are here to help you navigate!

What is a Den?

A den is made up of Scouts the same age as your scout. They work as a group through a series of adventures, learning new age-appropriate skills and making new friends along the way. The meeting schedule for a Den is up to the Den to decide.

What is a Pack?

The pack is the full collection of all the Dens. Pack meetings are typically once-a-month (in addition to whatever meeting schedule your Den is having) and include all-age appropriate activities, games, singing, skits, awards, and announcements.

Who are the leaders?

The Pack has lots of room for leaders, including possibly you!

The "Big 3" are: Your Cubmaster is the front facing part of your pack, and is responsible for running the monthly Pack meetings. Your Committee Chair works with the Parents to figure out what we're going to do, make sure applications gets processed, and takes care of a lot of behind the scenes stuff. Your Commissioner assists the other leaders interface with the Council, and generally takes a watch over the longer-term health of the pack.

In addition to these, each Den has a Den Leader. This position is responsible for ensuring Den Meeting happen, working with the other Den parents to take turns running the meetings.

Last but not least - each and every Parent is also a leader and help guide the Pack. We have weekly "Parents Meetings" where we decide what we are going to do and how we are going to do it. Cub Scouting doesn't work without parent participation, and this is a great and easy way to get started. Want to make sure the next camping trip happens when you can make it? Show up to the parents meeting and help decide the dates.

What are Ranks?

  • Kindergarten - Lions

  • First Grade - Tigers

  • Second Grade - Wolves

  • Third Grade - Bears

  • Fourth Grade - Webelos

  • Fifth Grade - Arrow of Light

At each of these ranks, the scouts have the opportunities to complete requirements, which then complete adventures. Completing adventures earns your Scouts belt loops (or pins for Webelos) to be shown off!

Complete enough adventures and requirements and at the end of year you earn the patch for that rank on your uniform!
